Marcus and I recently renewed our membership of the Scottish Malt Whisky Society. It’s a whisky club that started out in 1983 with a few friends in Edinburgh sharing single cask whisky and exploring the flavours. They are a global whisky club with over 41,000 members worldwide. We hope to be able to take guests to either Edinburgh (which is open to the public) or Glasgow which is totally exclusive to members.
This week they ran a tasting local to us, in Broughty Ferry – the “posh” part of Dundee. We’re Carnoustie based, so it’s just ten minutes from us.
The evening was supposed to be on Burns night, but due to storm Eowyn it was resheduled. We started off enjoying Scotland’s national dish, haggis, neeps and tatties. “Neeps” is just the Scots word for turnip or swede. Haggis is a savoury pudding made from minced offal, suet, oatmeal, onion and spices. Tatties are potatoes which are mashed. This is typically served with a dram – or two! Guests are often put off by it but those who dare to try it, love it.
a bottle of 30 year old single cask linkwood We sampled a Speyburn 15 y/o, An Cnoc 9 y/o, Harris 6 y/o, Caol Isla 13 y/o. Then a 32 y/o Glen Moray which at £450 a bottle some would consider the best. However,we fell in love with a bottle of 30 year old single cask from Linkwood Distillery.
It’s a Refill Bourbon Hogshead, with a
2nd fill Toasted Hogshead and
1 of 197 bottled at 49.2 %We got it for £250 on the night, instead of £295. That’s one of the beauties of being a member of the SMWS – you not only get to sample totally unique whiskies but can purchase at a discount at their tastings. – can’t wait to sample it at home! YUM.
